Dynamic pricing tariffs have a mixed history of success but there is room for optimism. Many Americans are open to the idea of dynamic pricing, and have experienced it in other aspects of their lives. There is a lot of work to do, however, if the utility sector is to achieve widespread adoption. While consumers can make personal assessments regarding the tradeoffs between the effort required and the anticipated savings, more education about pricing is necessary to allow consumers to understand their baseline and the rationale for savings claims. Thus, utilities must focus on customer education and engagement, and develop rates that are simple to understand and targeted to appropriate customer segments.
