Learning to separate the personal from the intellectual—to debate an issue without assuming malicious intentions on the other side—is one of the most virtuous and difficult achievements in science. The history of science is full of stories of those who failed to do so. Renaissance mathematicians once dueled over solutions to cubic equations, and Newton famously broke Leibnitz’s heart during their dispute over who invented calculus. That rivals eventually learned to speak to each other with respect, and even to cooperate, is a relatively recent development in the sciences.
